History

What is the overall theme of Vuong-Riddick's poem?- Everybody was killing each other and they had nowhere to go. They could not stay where they were because everybody would just be killed. So they all decided that they would go to America where everybody would be safe.

Jack Smith

How did Jack Smith's attitude toward the war change?- His feelings towards the war changed because he realized how scary the war actually was. He didn't know that he was going to war, but when he did it scared him beyond belief. When he signed up for the military, he thought that it was just going to be a walk in the park, but it was the opposite of that. Being in the war was the most horrific, scary and gruesome thing that he had ever seen.

What challenges does Jack Smith face as a soldier in Vietnam?
  • He had to deal with the hardships of everyday life
  • He had to be on alert at all times
  • He had to know what he was doing
  • He had to follow orders
  • He had to take criticism
  • He had to give all he had for his country

Letter to Veterans

Dear Veterans,

I cannot believe that the public did not very much appreciate what you did for them after the war. You put your life on the line so that you could enjoy yours. I am very grateful for what you have done, and I know that you will never be forgotten.

Farmer Nguyen, The Massacre at Mai Lai, The Nun In Nin Hoa

What do these two poems and the article say about the impact of the war on the native Vietnamese?- The war was hard on them. The Vietcong would beat and torture somebody that would not give them rice or someone who would not carry their supplies for them. Innocent people were killed and their was hardly any mercy shown. For example, the United States troops would fire into a ditch that was full of dying people just to put them out of their misery.
Can you think of any other ways in which the war will impact the native Vietnamese?- The Native Vietnamese people were only fighting for their own freedom. In a lot of ways the United States was just taking their freedom away from them. The United States was doing what they felt was right to stop the spread of communism, but a lot of people thought it was wrong.

Civil Disobedience

I think I could. I am the kind of person who does not enjoy getting into fight with other people even if I really did not support their views. I think it is a good thing that they defied the laws, even if they got in trouble for doing so. Patterns emerged saying that new laws would not be enough to ensure peace and equality. Two forces quarreled, even though they were not always peaceful clashes. Students played a big role in making the United States better for black people. I think if I came across a riot I would get out of their, but I would still take part in civil disobendience.
